Understanding scoring formats: Sideout vs. Rally

Last updated on Jan 27, 2026

Choosing the right scoring format can change the pace and strategy of your game. Here is a breakdown of the two primary ways to track points on Reclub.

Sideout Scoring

Sideout is the traditional scoring method often used in pickleball and volleyball.

  • Point Eligibility: Only the serving team can score points.

  • Winning a Rally: If the serving team wins a rally, they earn a point and keep the serve.

  • Losing a Rally: If the serving team loses a rally, they do not lose a point; instead, the serve simply passes to the other side (a "sideout").

Rally Scoring

Rally scoring is designed for a faster, more predictable game length.

  • Point Eligibility: A point is awarded on every single rally, no matter who served.

  • Universal Scoring: If Team A wins the rally, they get a point.

  • Universal Scoring: If Team B wins the rally, they get a point.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Sideout if you prefer a classic feel where the game can potentially last longer and requires a "comeback" to earn the right to score.

Choose Rally if you have a tight schedule for your meet, as points are scored much faster and games finish more quickly.
